IU forward Devin Davis cited for marijuana possession

.BLOOMINGTON -- IU junior forward Devin Davis was cited Monday night for possession of marijuana under 30 grams, according to an IU Police Department spokesman. Davis was not placed under arrest.According to Lt. Craig Munroe of the IU Police Department, IUPD received a call Monday night at around 8 p.m. reporting an odor of marijuana in a campus dormitory. Officers responding to the call arrived at Hickory Hall, a residence center on campus, and detected an odor of marijuana from an open second-floor window, Munroe said. Upon arrival, officers found Davis and one other person in the dormitory apartment, Munroe said. Officers were given permission to search the apartment. "They located a backpack that contained a baggie with a small amount of marijuana in it," Munroe said. After determining that the backpack belonged to Davis, they issued him the citation. The other party present in the room was not cited, and IUPD declined to name that person. Munroe said Davis was not placed under arrest or handcuffed at any point during the incident. Davis, a former Warren Central High School star, missed the entire 2014-15 season, after he was injured in a car accident involving teammate Emmitt Holt. Davis was struck by a car Holt was driving early on the morning of Nov. 1, after he entered the roadway unexpectedly in front of the car. Davis was at Bloomington Hospital and a rehabilitation hospital in Indianapolis before returning to Indiana for the spring semester. He was a regular presence on IU's bench and in its huddle, and IU coach Tom Crean has remained hopeful that Davis will be able to return to basketball, perhaps as soon as the upcoming season. This incident is the latest in a series of legal run-ins for Indiana's men's basketball program. In February 2014, Hanner Mosquera-Perea was arrested for OWI. In April of that same year, Yogi Ferrell and Stanford Robinson were cited for minor consumption and possession of false identification. And in the accident involving Holt and Davis, Holt registered a BAC of .025. Holt was 18 at the time. Indiana's players lived together on campus this past year, a change in procedure from previous seasons. Here is the statement from IU: "We have been made aware that Indiana sophomore Devin Davis was cited by IUPD for possession of marijuana in an IU dormitory room last evening. Effective immediately, Davis has been suspended from all team activities. Any additional action related to Davis' status will occur after further review of this matter. We understand that junior Hanner Mosquera-Perea was present at the time of the incident but was not charged by IUPD. Mosquera-Perea's role, if any, will also be reviewed as part of this matter."
